Police Digital Service - building a secure digital community for UK policing
The challenge
PDS needed an online platform that could rapidly facilitate sector-wide collaboration and best practice exchange, while also meeting high security requirements to store and share Official-Sensitive content. There was also a requirement to offer a mobile application that could be accessed by front-line officers in low connectivity areas.
Placecube's collaboration platform expertise has been invaluable; they've been incredibly helpful in meeting the Police Digital Service's (PDS) security needs. The knowledge platform we created offers a secure environment essential to the daily operations of those working in policing. Furthermore, the fact that Placecube manages its own collaboration platform allows us to share valuable insights and best practice on community management.
The solution
Placecube worked closely with the PDS Knowledge Manager to ensure rapid deployment of the standard Digital Communities software, allowing for quick testing and training of system administrators. The speedy implementation enabled PDS and Placecube to focus on developing key security features. These features included enhanced checks on individuals’ identity, vetting and auditability of users accessing secure content, multi-factor authentication at login and automated deactivation and deletion of accounts after specific time periods.
In collaboration with PDS and other key stakeholders, Placecube developed and delivered a mobile app tailored to the needs of front-line staff. This application provides instant access to the latest protocols and procedural information, designed to be accessible anytime, anywhere, even in areas with limited mobile connectivity.
The results
The PDS knowledge platform has received excellent feedback from users and currently hosts well over 20,000 members, with hundreds of new sign-ups every month. PDS continues to enhance the platform to improve usability for members and develop time-saving administrative features.
PDS has also benefited from reusing Placecube’s existing help and guidance material and consulting with their knowledge and community managers on commonly raised user questions.
